Tanning Ledge: Pros, Cons & Why Delaware Dogs (and Their Humans) Love Them

Looking for the perfect pool feature to keep everyone cool — from toddlers to golden retrievers? A tanning ledge might be exactly what your backyard needs.
At Ashton Pools By Design, about 80% of our clients include tanning ledges in their pools — and it’s easy to see why. Whether you’re dreaming of soaking in the sun, watching the kids splash, or giving your pup a favorite spot to lounge, a tanning ledge is one of the most versatile and beloved additions to any pool design.
☀️ What Is a Tanning Ledge?
A tanning ledge (also called a sun shelf or Baja shelf) is a shallow platform in the pool — usually 6 to 12 inches deep — that allows for lounging in the water without fully swimming. It’s a popular built-in feature in many fiberglass pool models and fully customizable in concrete pools.
✅ Pros of a Tanning Ledge
1. Relax in Style
Set up your favorite in-pool chaise, rest a drink nearby, and enjoy the water without diving in. It’s your personal resort, right in your backyard.
2. Great for Kids
Shallow water means it’s a perfect splash zone for babies and toddlers. Many families use tanning ledges as a baby pool alternative — a safe and supervised space for little ones to play.
3. Even Better for Dogs
Any dog that loves water loves a tanning ledge. We’ve even designed custom ones just for dogs — seriously! Shallow entry and cool-down access make it their favorite summer hangout.
4. Built for Comfort
We keep chaise lounges, in-pool chairs, and side tables in our design studio so clients can test them out and customize their tanning ledge setup. No guesswork — just real comfort.
5. Flexible Design Options
Many fiberglass models already come with integrated tanning ledges.
For concrete pools, we design:
- Full-width ledges for multiple loungers
- Three-part ledge entry systems (Steps → Ledge → Swim Lane)
6. Enhanced Design Features
- Add bubblers for a playful water effect
- Customize tile or finish to match your pool aesthetic
- Include LED lighting for nighttime ambiance

⚠️ When to Skip a Tanning Ledge
A tanning ledge may not be the best fit if:
- Your backyard space is tight
- You’re prioritizing a long swim lane and don’t want to sacrifice water depth
We’ll walk you through the tradeoffs during the design process to help you make the right call.
☂️ Why We Don’t Recommend Umbrella Sleeves in Delaware
In other regions, umbrella sleeves built into tanning ledges are common. But here in coastal Delaware, strong winds are a regular guest. An umbrella flying out of its sleeve can crack your plaster or damage your ledge structure — and it’s just not worth the risk.
Instead, we help clients choose premium side tables that hold umbrellas securely. You’ll still enjoy shade — without risking the investment you’ve made in your pool finish.
🧐 Tanning Ledge Misconceptions
Some people assume tanning ledges are just for sunbathing. But in reality, they’re far more versatile:
- A cool-down space after a swim
- A gathering zone for kids and adults
- A shallow water play area for pets
- A quiet escape from the deeper swim zones
📸 Real Client Favorites
We’ve installed tanning ledges in:
- Fiberglass pools from top-tier manufacturers
- Custom concrete pools with integrated fire and water features
- Backyard retreats with room for multiple loungers, a cooler, and a dog bed (yes, really)
Whether you want a compact splash zone or a full sun shelf to host your crew, we can design a ledge that fits your style, space, and family.
