What is a Raised Pool? 

When you think of above-ground pools, you might recall the traditional round structures from childhood. However, a raised pool is entirely different. These are custom-built concrete pools that are elevated above the ground, either due to environmental factors or to align with the level of a home constructed on pilings or “stilts”. 

Why a Raised Pool is Essential in Delaware 

Delaware is one of the lowest-lying states in the U.S., making water table issues a significant challenge for pool construction. Even in areas where you might not expect groundwater concerns, the water table can be surprisingly high. In our own home, we hit water just 18 inches below the surface, making a traditional in-ground pool impossible. Instead, we designed a raised pool that aligns with our first-floor elevation.

Why Aren’t More Pools Built This Way? 

The main reason raised pools aren’t more common is cost. Building a pool above ground requires a completely different engineering approach compared to traditional in-ground pools. Some of the additional construction requirements include:

• Thicker walls that serve as both retaining walls and pool barriers. 

• Double rebar mat reinforcement for added strength. 

Exterior Finishing:  

• Stucco or stone veneer to enhance visual appeal. 
• Custom coping to accommodate the thicker walls. 

Deck & Patio Construction:  

• Raised patios often accompany raised pools, requiring additional excavation, concrete footers, CMU block, rebar, and exterior veneer. 
• Proper backfilling and compacting ensure the stability of the entire structure.
